Cal State San Bernardino women’s volleyball team outlasts Cal Poly Pomona – Press Enterprise
SAN BERNARDINO — There were huge swings of momentum throughout Saturday evening’s women’s volleyball match between California Collegiate Athletic Association rivals Cal State San Bernardino and Cal Poly Pomona.
But momentum was firmly on the side of Cal State San Bernardino during the latter stages of the fifth and final set.
Senior middle blocker Taryn King registered a solo block and two block assists in that decisive game, as the Coyotes outlasted Cal Poly Pomona 25-20, 16-25, 25-21, 15-25, 15-8 in a battle of nationally-ranked teams at Coussoulis Arena.
The two squads now find themsleves tied for second place in the conference standings, one game behind Cal State LA.
Cal State San Bernardino (13-3 overall, 6-2 in CCAA) finished the night with 13 blocks. King led the way for the Yotes at the net with one solo block and seven block assists. She was in on back-to-back blocks that helped gave Cal State San Bernardino an 8-4 lead in the fifth set.
“We did a really great job defending at the net, especially at the very end,” Yotes coach Kim Cherniss said. “We put some good pressure on them from the service line, and that compromised what they were looking to do.”
King gave Cal State San Bernardino a 5-4 advantage in that final set with her fourth kill of the match. The Coyotes never relinquished the lead, as seven players recorded at least one kill during that frame.
Cal Poly Pomona (13-3, 6-2) hurt its chance for a late comeback with three service errors in the back half of the fifth set.
“It boils down to errors in the fifth set… unforced errors,” Broncos coach Traci Dahl said. “You can’t miss serves against any good team in the fifth set. Period… It’s little things like that, against a team like San Bernardino, you just can’t give them a breath.”
Cal State San Bernardino raced to a 10-3 lead and never trailed in the opening set. Junior outside hitter Ashley Robinson led the attack with five kills and was on the service line for a key run at the start of the game. A block by King and junior outside hitter Savannah Hoffmann ended the set.
The Yotes’ serve receive broke down in the second set, as Cal Poly Pomona registered six aces en route to leveling the match. Junior outside hitter Samantha Campion served up three straight aces to help the Broncos take a 16-11 lead. Junior outside hitter Madison Novak and senior opposite hitter Daisy Duke had four kills apiece for Cal Poly Pomona that set.
Cal Poly Pomona, ranked No. 13 in the nation in Division II, raced to a 6-1 led in the third set. Cherniss used a timeout to settle things down.
“I don’t know if it’s printable,” Cherniss said with a smile when asked what she told her players during that break.
Whatever was said worked, as the No. 14-ranked Yotes answered with a 9-3 run to take the lead. Senior middle blocker Jenna Patton was having a quiet night offensively to that point, but she erupted for six kills during the third game. Novak did her best to keep Cal Poly Pomona within striking distance with six kills of her own in the frame.
Cal Poly Pomona responded with a 5-1 run at the start of the fourth game and never trailed en route to forcing a fifth set. Duke and Novak combined for nine kills that frame to help the Broncos once again even up the match.
Cal State San Bernardino senior setter Marlee Nunley finished with 35 assists and kept things balanced on offense. Robinson and Hoffmann had 13 kills apiece, while Patton and freshman opposite hitter Trinity Sheridan each added 10 kills.
“I trust all my hitters and know they will put the ball away,” said Nunley, who also recorded 14 digs and four block assists. “I just have to put the ball up there nice and clean for them to hit. They all did a great job today.”
Shira Lahav, a graduate student and libero from Israel, had 18 digs and a team-high three aces for Cal State San Bernardino.
Cal Poly Pomona had the match leaders in kills (Novak, 19), assists (junior setter Catie Mueller, 42), digs (junior libero Avery Percival, 22) and aces (Campion, 5). Duke finished with 12 kills, while Campion recorded 10 kills and 19 digs.
