Chargers WR Mike Williams suffers season-ending knee injury – Orange County Register
The Chargers won their first game of the season on Sunday, but suffered another significant loss when they learned Monday that standout wide receiver Mike Williams tore his left ACL during the third quarter of their 28-24 victory over the Minnesota Vikings, according to multiple reports.
Williams will be sidelined for the rest of the season, ESPN and the NFL Network reported, citing unnamed sources. An MRI exam revealed the extent of Williams’ injury Monday morning. He is expected to be sound enough to participate in training camp next summer, according to ESPN’s report.
Chargers coach Brandon Staley was scheduled to hold a Zoom call with reporters Monday afternoon.
Williams was hurt after making a catch and run for an 11-yard gain, falling to the turf after making an awkward move and then getting tackled in a jarring collision with the Vikings’ Harrison Phillips with 1:45 remaining in the third quarter. Williams needed assistance to reach the sideline.
A cart then took him to the Chargers’ locker room.
Williams caught seven passes for a season-high 121 yards and one touchdown Sunday on a 49-yard pass play from wide receiver Keenan Allen on a trick play that gave the Chargers a 21-10 lead with 5:53 left in the third quarter. Allen caught a team-record 18 passes from quarterback Justin Herbert for 215 yards.
In the absence of Williams, a seven-year veteran, the Chargers will likely target rookie wide receiver Quentin Johnston, a first-round draft pick out of TCU, plus veteran Josh Palmer more often for the rest of the season. Herbert connected with eight different receivers during the Chargers’ victory over the Vikings on Sunday.
Herbert completed 40 of 47 passes for 405 yards and three touchdowns.
