Redlands football falls to Linfield University in nonconference finale – Press Enterprise

REDLANDS — University of Redlands quarterback Tyler Tremain ran for an 18-yard touchdown. With the conversion by Vincente Garcia, the Bulldogs cut Linfield’s advantage to 17-10 with 1:16 remaining.

Garcia’s subsequent onside kick was well executed, bouncing high and giving his teammates an opportunity to recover. Redlands did that, but they touched it before the ball went the necessary 10 yards. Linfield ran out the clock to secure the victory.

This raises the question of whether the late score mattered in the final analysis.

“It shows are guys never give up and have a great attitude,” Redlands coach Jim Good said. “I’m very proud of our defense. We played a top-quality opponent well.”

Redlands had an impressive drive near the end of the fourth quarter. They moved 90 yards on 18 plays to set up Termain’s score.

Linfield, which is a perennial Division III playoff team, was notable for its team speed. The Wildcats have won two road games and will begin conference play in two weeks. Redlands is 1-1 and will travel to Chapman University to start the Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference next Saturday.

“They (Linfield) were really fast,” said Tremain, a sophomore who won three of four starts as a freshman quarterback. “We killed ourselves with some mistakes, but we were right there with them.”

Tremain completed 17-of-35 passes for 165 yards. He was sacked four times and threw two interceptions, which proved costly to the Bulldogs. The second interception came with 10:37 remaining on a deep pass along the sideline.

“I was under pressure on the sideline,” Tremain said. “We have to take care of the football and ourselves. It is a blessing to start in college football and I don’t take it for granted.”

Linfield drove 67 yards in 10 plays at the end of the third quarter. Eaton, who completed 22-of-30 passes for 192 yards, hit Jacob Slivka with a 25-yard pass on third down. He hit a 1-yard touchdown pass to Devon Murray with four seconds left in the third quarter.

Linfield opened the scoring with a 14-play drive which covered 50 yards. The Wildcats were successful by converting three fourth-down situations, the final one coming on Aaron Martinez’s one-yard touchdown run with 5:01 remaining in the opening quarter.

The teams exchanged second-quarter field goals. Vincente Garcia made a 23-yard field goal with 1:15 remaining in the second quarter. Linfield drove quickly with the remaining time. Eaton completed four passes, including two passes to Devon Murray and a 9-yard pass to Connor McNab which moved the ball to the Redlands 41-yard line.

McNabb gained three yards and Eaton picked up four yards to bring the ball to the Redlands 34 with two seconds remaining. Gavin Dalziel was successful on a career-long 51-yard field goal.
